MEDS organizes international events for students of all design disciplines to pursue their ideas and showcase their talent in different cultural environments.

Events take part each summer in different countries, focusing on various issues, themes, topics and settings that will help any designer to expand their experience. It is a chance to get in touch with diverse approaches to design, different building techniques, traditions and skills. MEDS events are not only practical but also theoretical with several conferences taking part.

Last year I participated in MEDS Dublin 2014. The theme was Global Green and the various workshops all focused on environmental and social issues facing modern day Dublin. The workshops took place over a two week period in August and I, along with 4 other Canadian students (all from EVDS), joined over 200 design students from around the world to work on various projects ranging from photography and street art to pavilion and industrial design. Here’s a photo journal of last year’s conference as well as info on the upcoming conference in Tara National Park, Serbia. We worked on a project called the Bait Hive Initiative building bee hive prototypes and engaging the community about the benefits of urban bee keeping.

MEDS TARA 2015   |   AUGUST, 2015

We will be leaving the city lights behind. Far away from contemporary civilization without shops, flash light and artificial noise. We will purify our collective creative spirits and become „naked minds“ again. Our goal will be to get inspired by traditional work, craftsmen and nature and putting it in our own designs. Not to get distracted by the outside world but seeking creativity inside of us and in the ones around. Its about meeting people, nature, material, culture, language and opinion. There is a story that needs to be told. Come to Tara and help us write it. MEDS Tara 2015 is an event that will gather arround 300 young architects and designers from all Europe in a miission of creating wooden objects with purpose defined by National park Tara needs.

You can either apply to be a tutor and submit a proposal (by April 30th) to be a project lead with a team of designers or simply apply to be a participant.

I highly recommend this workshop. We had an amazing time last year and now have many friends to visit and industry contacts all over the world. For students at the University of Calgary there are scholarships for international conferences and travel from the students union and the faculty of graduate studies among others (at least two of us received these scholarships last year).
